As Coventry City Council’s Transport Innovation Manager, I have navigated the dynamic landscape of kerbside innovation, an exhilarating yet challenging realm where progress often outpaces the necessary legislation. So as we exit 2023 I wanted to reflect and look towards the exciting developments the new year will bring.

In response to the escalating demand for charging facilities, Coventry intensified its installation of charge points throughout 2023. Remarkably, Coventry now boasts the second-highest number of charge points in the UK, a significant accomplishment considering London holds the top spot. AppyWay's real-time sensing and reporting capabilities played a pivotal role in scaling our rollout and placing data at the core of our planning.

Our commitment to kerbside innovation extends to being a testing ground for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAAVs). The UK Auto Drive project, funded by Innovate UK, stood as the country's largest CAAV initiative, positioning Coventry at the forefront.
|
With this in mind, the announcement of the Autonomous Vehicles (AV) Bill during the King's Speech was a moment of elation. This groundbreaking legislation aims to usher in a "transport revolution" by facilitating the safe deployment of self-driving vehicles. A key component of this legislation is the inclusion of digital traffic regulation orders (D-TROs), imperative for the safe operation of AVs.

Coventry's involvement dates back to 2019 when we provided council insights to an Innovate UK project that laid the foundation for what AppyWay now calls its Traffic Suite. Today, Traffic Suite is helping councils to efficiently manage digital traffic orders while generating data ready for an AV-driven future.

It feels like all roads have led to this point! We’re at an exciting juncture for UK transport innovation and I couldn’t be prouder that Coventry has taken a front seat on this journey!

On Wednesday 29th November, the AppyWay Traffic Suite User Group comprised of 12 UK councils convened in central London. Joined by special guest Paul Chandler, Head of Traffic Management Digital Services at the Department for Transport, the councils involved were updated on the alpha and beta phases of the D-TRO project, the upcoming legislative changes, and shared D-TRO knowledge and learnings with AppyWay and the wider group.

An ‘Appy switch for St Albans

St Albans moved from an in-house developed setup to a digital, map-based approach via Traffic Suite to drive efficiencies within their traffic order management process and speed up the implementation of schemes that benefit residents, businesses and visitors to St Albans. The suite is helping the council as a whole to make data-led decisions on meaningful kerbside changes and result in an ever more robust enforcement process.
